When a ferry boat sank on its way from La Gonave to the mainland drowning many people in 1998, Preval went to see the family of the victims and as he was sitting there, had someone bring him a cold beer and leaned his chair back and drank his beer; a real sign of sympathy for poor people who had just lost their loved ones.
