I'm not against the resignation of Aristide because it's proven to be a hiccup in the growth of the Haitian democracy, not a derailment.
And removing Aristide from the picture in the long is probably a benefit to the growth of Democracy in Haiti.
The Haitian people showed that they aren't going to tolerate corruption, cronyism, lack of transparency, political violence, criminal activities from those in government, etc. It's a new era of Haitian politics in which those in power are being watched by the people and held accountable.
While I protested against Aristide from Florida (in solidarity with my Haitian brothers and sisters who took to the streets bravely in the face of violence and even death), I was always torn about whether or not Aristide should leave because I thought that for the sake of democracy he should have been allowed to serve out his term. But in retrospect and from taking a broader, historical perspective, Aristide's resignation has only helped democracy in the grand scheme of things.
I feel confident that 25 or 50 years from now historians will note February 29th, 2004 as a defining moment that helped strengthen Haiti's democracy and usher in a new era of Haitian politics, bucking the 200 year tradition of the "winner-takes-all" fight for power.
