1991 FAILED COUP D'ETAT AGAINST ARISTIDE

Home > Haiti Elections Archives 2005 Forum > Rene Preval > 1991 FAILED COUP D'ETAT AGAINST ARISTIDE

In 1991, one day before the election former US president Jimmy Carter and former US ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young almost convinced then candidate Aristide to sign a letter of concession in favor of Marc Bazin.

They tried to convince Aristide that Marc Bazin had more votes, and they were afraid that the haitian people would not accept the results.

Aristide won the election with 67% of the votes.

That was the first failed coup d'etat against aristide.
